5 Reasons to Take YOUR Kids Strawberry Picking + Tips on Picking the BEST Berries + GIVEAWAY

Strawberry Picking at Kenny's Strawberry Farm

1 It’s Cheaper

Strawberry Picking at Kenny's Strawberry Farm

Strawberry picking can actually SAVE you money because you don’t have to pay the added costs of someone else picking, packaging, shipping, and shelving your produce. Plus, picking local berries saves on environmental costs too. The strawberries you see on the grocery store shelves have often traveled thousands of miles to get there.

2 Your Kids Learn Where Food Comes From

Food has become such a convenience that many of our kids lack the knowledge or understanding of where it actually comes from. Taking your kids to a u-pick strawberry farm like Kenny’s Strawberry Farm is a super fun way to help educate your kids about farming.

3 Support Our Local Farmers

We are so lucky to have so many wonderful farms surrounding us in Temecula and they need our support. Most farming these days is either imported or run by huge corporations. Supporting our local farmers helps them keep their self-owned businesses running. And, that is a HUGE benefit to all of us!

4 It’s Fun!

This may be the BEST reason! It is SO important to get out and have FUN as a family and the fact that strawberry picking pulls you and the kids away from the screens is an added bonus. Life is crazy, chaotic, and fast paced. Getting out on the farm, smelling the sweet smell of ripe berries, and getting your hands a little dirty (seriously not very dirty bc of the wonderful way Farmer Kenny grows his berries).

5 The Berries are the BEST You’ve Ever Tasted!

Strawberry Picking at Kenny's Strawberry Farm

I was AMAZED at how much more delicious our freshly picked strawberries were from Kenny’s Farm compared with all the organic berries I paid a fortune for at the store. Turns out all of that transportation of the berries to get them on the store shelves totally affects the flavor, freshness and nutrient levels of the berries. And, the difference is substantial. If you want to know how to pick the absolute most delicious berries, check out Farmer Kenny’s tips below.

Farmer Kenny’s Tips for Picking the Perfect Strawberry

1 The redder the better!
We always say that “red is best” here at Kenny’s. Strawberries only get sweeter while they are on the vine. Check to make sure the berry is red all the way around.
2 Take your time!
Strawberry picking can go quickly, but take your time and search for the biggest, juiciest ones you can find!
3 Have fun!
We hope you enjoy the farm as much as we do! Bring a picnic, pick some strawberries and spend the day with us. Thanks for being a part of our family and our farm!

  • Hi Amber,
I have never been strawberry picking. I wanted to take my kids cherry picking, but we never went. They’re grown now.

It’s hard to squeeze in everything, right? They grow up way too fast! Sorry you weren’t able to go.

I used to love picking strawberries with my kids. I almost forgot about it till I read your blog post. Now I know what I can do with my grandkids. Love this..

I appreciate this post especially since we grow and sell strawberries. Support your local growers.

    • Mama Munchkin says:

That is so awesome!!! I always love your recipe posts, I didn’t realize you grew strawberries as well. We LOVE supporting our local growers and are thankful to have their nearby.

  • LOVE this! This is exactly how we got our kids into gardening! Well, technically they got US into gardening. Visited a “U-Pick” strawberry patch, and they wanted to go the next year. After that, they said “Can’t we just grow our own?” Our home has never been the same since… in a GREAT way!!

    • Mama Munchkin says:

What an awesome story. I would love to get into gardening but I have such a brown thumb. I need to do some research and read so that I can actually do a decent job at it. I am sure my kids would LOVE it!! My dad grew all sorts of fruits and veggies when I was young. They taste so much better than store bought.

  • Ashley says:

We go blue berry and raspberry picking every summer, but have yet to go strawberry picking. I read an article that strawberries have the highest residual pesticide of any other fruit, so I’m going to have to find a local pesticide free U-Pick so that we can make sure to get only the best 🙂 Great post!

    • Mama Munchkin says:

Yum, blueberries and raspberries are actually my favorite. I agree you have to be careful with all berries regarding pesticides. That is why it is so great to go somewhere local where you can talk to the farmer and see exactly what is on your fruit 😉

  • I love everything about this!! As a child, I picked strawberries every year with my family. I will have to take my daughter out soon. Thanks for sharing!!

    • Mama Munchkin says:

You are SO welcome! I hope you and your daughter get the chance to go strawberry picking, it’s so fun!! Thanks for stopping by!

  • Mary Jane says:

What a great way to spend the day! It’s so true that the berries taste way better fresh 🙂 And…so important to teach kids how food grows! Thanks for this lovely post. Cheers, Mary Jane

  • I love picking strawberries with my kids!!! It is so much fun!!

  • Such fun family photos! We go berry picking at the farms by our house several times every summer. You’re right: not only is it fun, cheaper, and helps the kids know where their food comes from (and appreciate it more), but they are also the tastiest berries when picked fresh!

  • Tamara says:

Unfair contest. I don’t do instagram
