Go Bold Or Stay Timeless
I like to think about the personality I want my kitchen to exude when choosing a backsplash. We were going for a timeless, clean look this time. That’s why we went with these gorgeous and sleek 3”x6” Paloma subway tiles from JeffreyCourt.com. Working with Jeffrey Court was a painless experience. Their customer service was unmatched from beginning to end. They even shipped us some free samples which helped us tremendously in our decision-making process. You can look at pictures of tiles all day long but having them in your hand is a different story. Feeling their texture and seeing them in your space can give you an entirely different perspective.
The thing I love most about these Paloma subway tiles is that they have unfinished edges and the face of the tiles is actually textured. It’s a subtle change on the classic subway tile that gives it just a little edginess. Thanks to the uneven texture, these tiles catch the light from all different angles which gives a really nice effect. They’re pretty versatile too and could easily be used in both coastal or Tuscan style kitchens.
When we originally started on this kitchen makeover journey, we had intended to go for a bolder look with our backsplash. These gorgeous European style Urbano tiles were initially at the top of our list. We decided against them, only because we wanted the timeless feel that subway tiles give. Remember, a sample in hand can change your choice entirely!
One of the things I love most about Jeffrey Court’s line is the abundance of options. Mosaics are a great option if you’re looking for a bit of visual texture. The Nori Mosaic Oceana is a good option to give your kitchen a warm, cozy feeling while still maintaining that chic, clean feel.
Neutral Tiles Vs. Colorful Options
I recommend sticking with basic shapes if you’re aiming for a classic look that will last for ages. Squares, rectangles, and hexagons in neutral colors seem to defy the trend changes over time. These classic shapes can be bold choices if you opt for something with color or texture, like this Panello field tile in Brezza. Going with a gutsy choice like a teal or green tile can pay off big time for overall aesthetics but it tends to go out of style faster than the neutral options. This also helped influence our backsplash decision with that Paloma subway tile.
Colorful options really draw the eyes to that breathtaking backsplash, so it might be worth it for you to dive in with eye-catching color. On the other hand, sticking with your whites, greys, blacks, and beiges allows the freedom to adapt your kitchen to your ever-changing style. Little pops of color in your dishes and accessories can change the look of your space without having to start major demolition to update the backsplash.
Choosing A Material Type
Nowadays there are so many options when it comes to tile material for a backsplash- stone, glass, porcelain, Terra Cotta and ceramic to name a few! One thing I considered was the clean-up factor. Glass, porcelain and ceramic tiles are incredibly easy to clean and they’re very resistant to staining. If you’re a messy cooker, these are the ones for you! Splashes of spaghetti sauce or grease pops stand no chance.
Stone and Terra Cotta tiles have a really unique feel and look, but they can be a bit tougher to clean. Their one-of-a-kind look and welcoming feel gives a kitchen an entirely different personality though, so it’s totally worth it if that’s the look that speaks to you. Terra Cotta, of course, is excellent for Mediterranean or Spanish inspired kitchens. Stone is incredibly versatile and looks great as a modern accent or even as part of a rustic retreat.
Picking a Shape and Pattern That Fits Your Style
I know I touched on the shape and textures a bit already but let’s dive deeper into this topic. Texture plays an important role in a backsplash, just like with those Paloma subway tiles we went with. Remember how I mentioned the light reflects off of the uneven surface? It’s little details like that to consider when choosing your backsplash.
Jeffrey Court has a plethora of shapes to choose from like quatrefoils, hexagons, circles and even some obscure shapes. Choosing something like this makes your space really unique. If you aren’t ready to commit to a bold color but you want to dip your toes into the pool of bold backsplashes, consider one of these unique shapes in a neutral tone. Even rectangle tiles can be jazzed up and laid in a herringbone pattern for a really elegant touch!
Picking A Grout Color That Complements Your Space
Not all backsplashes have visible grout lines but if yours does then you have to consider your grout color. You’ll see more of the grout than you’d think so I recommend really trying to visualize your space with different colors or shades of grout. There’s even grout with glitter in it! It’s not that 80’s glam type of glitter but instead just a simple sparkle that may catch your eye from time to time.
I like going with neutral colors as to not take away from the beauty of the tiles. Personally, I think of grout more as a back-up singer and the tile is the frontman. But, feel free to make your grout speak for your space if that’s what you’re into! For example, white grout with our Paloma subway tiles makes for one smooth, cohesive look. Had we gone with a grey or black, it could have veered our kitchen into more of a farmhouse or industrial feel.
Remember, the backsplash is going to be the focal point of your kitchen. Whatever you choose, make it something you can’t wait to look at every day. I’m in awe of ours!
Our Kitchen Before & After
There are so many elements that go into a great home design project, finding a brand that not only fits your esthetics but also has incredible service is key. Jeffrey Court was wonderful to work with and I could not be happier with our new backsplash. In fact, I am already dreaming up a master bath remodel, just don’t tell my husband yet 😉
