When I was 8 years old the house down the street burned down from us. I remember the smoke and the flames, the bright lights of the fire truck, and the fear that I had that it might happen to my home. It turned out that our neighbors Christmas tree caught on fire which led to the disaster. Luckily, everyone got out safe, but their house was gone.
That’s why it’s so important to instill fire safety and prevention lessons into our kids from a young age. If we practice lessons each year during Fire Prevention and Safety Month (October!!) we’re laying a great foundation. It’s so important to teach our kids about fire prevention and what to do if a fire occurs.
4 Great Resources to Teach Kids About Fire Safety
Who doesn’t remember “Stop, Drop and Roll” from their childhood? Nowadays, organizations like The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) has so many more tools to teach about fire safety than what I learned back in the 80’s.
The NFPA has created Sparky School House, a hub of online games, videos, printables, lessons plans… anything you could possibly need to bring fire prevention and safety into your home or your classroom.
Sparky.org Online School
The Online School is a great resource to teach your kids lessons about fire safety. The main thing I love about the online school is you can search for lessons by grade level. This is great for our family since I have 5 kids. I can teach my little 5-year-old safety info that she will understand and then I can go over more complicated scenarios with my 5th grader. My youngest loves the coloring pages while my 11-year-old girl, Ella enjoys the riddles and crossword. This really makes fire safety a much more interactive learning experience and I can tell they are truly taking in the information.
Learn about Fire Safety with Sparky Apps
The NFPA also has some great apps for your kids to play on their ipad or phone. Olivia loved the match game and trying to get Sparky out of the house.. Now here is MY favorite part: Every game she unlocks is educational. It is so nice to have something educational for the kids while they are using their screen time. I love it!
Sparky Printables and Activities
My oldest daughter is a big fan of hands-on activities, (she was the queen of slime this summer) so we downloaded the pdf for making dog origami. We already have several little Sparky’s appearing throughout the house. Olivia loves the coloring pages, especially the special Halloween themed printables. She insists her pumpkin will be Sparky too, since there is a Sparky pumpkin template.
Sparky Schoolhouse
For Educators the NFPA has developed a curriculum for teachers to use to teach their students about fire safety. It has lesson plans, videos, interactive games for their students. This is an incredible tool
Anytime is a great time to teach kids about fire safety. With Fire Prevention week coming up (October 7-13) now is a great time to have an annual conversation and lessons with your kids about Fire Safety.
