Finally… a Toddler Carrier that Works!

We knew when we adopted Olivia one of the hurdles we would have would be trying to keep up with the big kids since she came a solid 6 years after our last. One of the most evident examples of this has been our inability to go on family hikes since Olivia has aged out of the baby carriers we once we able to carry her in. Which is why I was so excited to check out The Freeloader a carrier designed for toddlers and special needs.

See that smiling face? Olivia was so excited to get strapped into The Freeloader so that she could FINALLY join the big kids on a hike again. That is what makes The Freeloader so fantastic! We had used a soft baby carrier for years but once she outgrew that we were really left without many options when it came to trying to hike. We attempted bringing a stroller, awful idea, and we tried having her walk herself but as you can guess that just turned into us trying to carry her the entire time. So, we actually stopped hiking with her altogether. The Freeloader is a game changer though. Olivia is able to pop right in and safely and comfortably sit on the padded seat the entire length of a hike. The carrier positions her comfortably on my husband’s back and also frees up his hands in case he needs to use them and it’s easy to wear without a child in it when we reach an area that is okay for Olivia to walk herself. It’s really a win for parents who enjoy being outdoors with their toddlers and excellent for traveling families.

Features We Love:

  • The 5-point safety harness is positioned on the child’s back keeping clever escape artists safely buckled in at all times.
  • The aluminum seat folds up neatly and doesn’t look funky when you are walking around without a child inside.
  • There are several small pockets that you can store your wallet, phone, keys, and even a small camera in.
  • The carrier only weighs about 5 lbs
  • The max weight is a whopping 80 lbs

What We Wish They Would Change:

  • There wasn’t much we didn’t love about The Freeloader although I would say the price point ($299.99) is a bit high compared to the competition.
  • This carrier also requires two people to place the child on and get them strapped in properly which means it would not be a great choice for those looking to hike/ travel alone with their child.
