I’ve been a Starbucks addict for quite some time, so I’ve learned that generally speaking, every time the coffee chain releases a new drink it’s bound to be a hit.
But I will be honest- when I heard about the Starbucks Pistachio Latte, I was hesitant. Personally, I’m not the biggest pistachio fan, but my husband sure is and even though it’s definitely “trending” in the foodie world, I wasn’t 100% on board with drinking my pistachios.
Of course, I had no reason to doubt Starbucks’ caffeine-fueled wisdom. As soon as I had my first sip of the Pistachio Latte, I was hooked! The nutty drink features a clever pairing with brown butter that hits all the right notes and makes this a perfect, cozy drink for these cold winter months.
But who really wants to cough up $5+ for just one coffee, when you can simply replicate the recipe at home? Especially now, when many of us are working from home, heading out in the cold and heating up your car just to sit in the Starbucks drive-thru line sounds pretty unappealing. You already work from your house, so why not enjoy your morning coffee from home as well?
Like most lattes, the Pistachio Latte is made with a steamed milk base, combined with espresso and flavored syrups- it’s easier than it sounds! And making this latte in your own kitchen also allows you to customize the ingredients you choose, so you can make a healthy twist that you won’t feel guilty drinking every morning.
Read on to learn how you can make the new Pistachio Latte at home!
Copycat Starbucks Pistachio Latte
We’re “nuts” for this recipe! A pre-made pistachio syrup and simple technique for browning butter makes this latte come together quickly. A pinch of brown sugar crumble tops off this cozy cup.
Ingredients
- ½ cup brewed espresso or strong coffee
- 1 ¼ cups whole milk
- 1-2 tbsp. pistachio syrup (to taste)- can be purchased online here
- 1 tbsp. butter
- 2 tbsp. granulated sugar
- ½ tbsp. brown sugar
Optional tools
Directions
Step 1: In the microwave, heat the milk in a large mug until very warm but not boiling. Set aside.
Step 2: In a small saucepan, heat the butter, stirring frequently. Allow to turn brown in color and immediately remove from heat, continuing to stir. (Watch the butter carefully, it can turn from golden brown to burnt very quickly!)
Step 3: Pour ½ of the browned butter, the pistachio syrup, granulated sugar, and coffee into mug, stirring to combine with steamed milk. (Optional: use milk frother to create foam).
Step 4: In a small bowl, combine the remaining butter with the brown sugar. Top the latte with the brown sugar mixture. Enjoy!
Healthy Twist on Starbucks Pistachio Latte
Like many of Starbucks’ drinks, the added sugars and full-fat milk are delicious, but definitely not the healthiest for you. This twist on the Starbucks Pistachio Latte cuts the fat content and allows you to customize your ingredients so you can make the drink into a healthy option that fits your low-fat, low-sugar, or other lifestyle! Honey and vanilla take the place of the browned butter to cut the fat content, but if you don’t like the flavor of honey or vanilla you can simply use the butter instead.
Note: Nut milks have not been recommended as they could clash with the pistachio flavor and become a bit overwhelming.
Ingredients
- ½ cup brewed espresso or strong coffee
- 1 ¼ cups skim, soy, or oat milk
- 1-2 tbsp. pistachio syrup (to taste)- can be purchased online here
- 1 tbsp. honey
- ½ tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp. granulated Splenda, Stevia, or other sugar substitute
Optional tools
Directions
Step 1: In the microwave, heat the milk in a large mug until very warm but not boiling. Set aside.
Step 2: Pour the honey, vanilla extract, pistachio syrup, sugar substitute, and coffee into mug, stirring to combine with steamed milk. (Optional: use milk frother to create foam). Enjoy!
