There are few better pick-me-ups than a delicious creamy Jave Chip Frappuccino from Starbucks. However, the cost of getting a frappuccino from Starbucks really adds up, not to mention the calories. Why not try your hand at making your own frappuccino from the comfort of your kitchen? You can save money, plus customize your drink to make it healthy or adapt the recipe to your dietary specifications.
This creamy concoction features frappuccino chips and the classic mocha sauce that make it so irresistible. For this DIY recipe, we have a great tip for making your own version of the “frappuccino roast” that Starbucks uses in their blended beverages. You’ll want to give it a try!
All About Our Favorite Substitutes for the Java Chip Frappuccino
The exact recipe that Starbucks has two main ingredients; whole milk and ice. The java chip recipe also calls for mocha sauce, java chips, and coffee. Unfortunately, you aren’t going to be able to use the exact frappuccino chips or coffee that Starbucks uses, as they purchase pre-packaged mixes that are exclusive for the company.
To substitute the java frappuccino chips, simply use semi-sweet chocolate chips! And the mocha sauce can be substituted in a few different ways. We’ve opted for chocolate sauce, which you may already have at home.
All of Starbucks’ frappuccinos have a whole milk base, to give them the reach and creamy flavor we love. For a healthier swap, you can use alternative milk that will still be creamy and delicious but save some calories along the way. Here are some options to consider when making a homemade Java Chip Frappuccino.
Milk Type | Calories/1 cup Serving | Average Cost |
Whole milk | 150 cal. | $2.19/gallon |
2% milk | 120 cal. | $2.19/gallon |
Skim milk | 80 cal. | $2.19/gallon |
Soy milk | 100 cal. | $3.99/half gallon |
Almond milk | 60 cal. | $3.99/gallon |
Oat milk | 90 cal. | $5.29/half gallon |
As you can see, there are plenty of great affordable options that will help you customize your java chip frappuccino and cut the calories. This way you don’t have to feel guilty while enjoying your yummy coffee drink! Even though some of these milk substitutes may cost a bit more per serving, it is still far cheaper than buying just one drink from Starbucks. Plus, purchasing a half-gallon or gallon of milk will allow you to make several drinks for the price of one at Starbucks!

sadly you can not replace Starbucks Java chips with dark chocolate chips. There IS coffee in Starbucks Java chips, hence the name, so it won’t be the same. I am stunned no one else has caught on to make decent dark chocolate coffee chips yet. Guess Nestles has a version but it gets bad reviews for not having a coffee flavor.
