Picture the most gorgeous emerald hills, rich red dirt and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Now imagine witnessing such beauty atop one of the most gorgeous animals. And, you don’t have to be an experienced rider. Kids as young as 8 years old can enjoy this activity. This is one of the reasons Gunstock Ranch is a MUST when you are looking at things to do in Oahu.
This family owned cattle ranch has been in business for over 40 years and their expertise shines through in their friendly and knowledgeable staff. They offer horseback rides for all skill levels and they even have pony rides for the kids! This is definitly an activity you want on your list.
Amazing Things to Do in Oahu- 3 Reasons Gunstock Ranch is a MUST
Stunning Views
Hawaii is known for its pristine coastal waters and gorgeous beaches. But, an all too often overlooked scenic spot is definitely Hawaii’s countryside. Take a breathe of this crisp, cool ocean air and escape some of the heat on the beach as you drive into the countryside to see a Hawaii most don’t even know exists. You will see views of the ocean surrounded by some of the most gorgeous shades of green. The lush often moist grasses in the pasture look so vibrant against the red mud. And, the views of the mountains are majestic.
You can see why Hawaiians feel that the Earth around them is living and breathing because you feel so in tune with the nature that surrounds you as you ride through the hills on top of a horse. I honestly think it is my favorite way to experience the plentiful views Oahu has to offer.
Knowledgeable Staff
As all travelers know the staff can make or break an experience. Thankfully, the staff at Gunstock Ranch is clearly there to please. We had the pleasure of riding with 3 staff members on our scenic ride and I was quite impressed with each of them. I loved listening to the stories of the history of the ranch as we walked along. The staff pointed out spots of the property that had been used by the tv industry and we even learned some of the tactics they use to break (train) their new horses. A few of which were born on property which Ella thought was so cool!
I also loved how kid friendly the staff were as they intelligently worded their conversations to keep the interest of my 4 kids that I had in tow.
Something for ALL Skill Levels
My kids have ridden horses a few times in their past and taken a couple lessons (see here) but I would still consider them beginners. Especially, the younger three. Whereas I have ridden most of my life and owned several horses so I was pleased to hear all the options Gunstock Ranch had to suit every one of our skill levels and desires.
At Gunstock ranch, kids as young as 8 years old are able to go on the scenic trail-rides which were great because I could take all four of my munchkins with me. What I didn’t realize until I got to the ranch was that they also have awesome pony rides for younger kiddos. We will have to bring Liv back next time.
We also learned that my oldest son and I who have both passed lope checks before could have tested and ridden on an advanced ride. The advanced ride allows experienced riders to trot and canter through over 600 acres of Hawaiian countryside! That sounds like SO much fun and it’s on the top of our list for the next time we are in Oahu.
They even offer lessons and horse camps if you are in Oahu for an extended period of time!!
Gunstock Ranch is clearly a win as far as family adventures and activities go on the beautiful island of Oahu.

Oh wow! I lived on Oahu for 4 years and never knew about this place! How cool 🙂
Isn’t it funny how we typically don’t tour our own towns. Just recently I have learned a ton of activities in my town that I didn’t know existed. Some awesome hiking trails, a camel dairy and some secret beaches. I love how blogs can show you new things 🙂
Awe this is a great post and a great blog lady! You do such a great job!
I have been on the lookout for things to do in Oahu and this looks fantastic, I love horseback riding! I am getting married and honeymooning out there 🙂
Ahhh… congrats on your marriage. I got married in Maui. Hawaii is a perfect venue 🙂 Best wishes!!!
Looks fun! I haven’t gone horseback riding since I was a kid!
Every time we go to Hawaii, horseback riding is one of those things I have to do. Never done it on Oahu (really haven’t spent much time there) but you’ve sold me on a short stop just for a trail ride.
It was my first time horseback riding in Hawaii and we go a lot… I would love recommendations for the other islands. Such a gorgeous place to ride 🙂 You should definitely spend some time in Oahu. North Shore, Turtle Beach and hiking are all fantastic there!
This looks like so much fun and a great way to enjoy parts of the island off you otherwise wouldn’t have access to. I haven’t ridden a horse in years, and my kids have never done so at all, so I love how they cater to all skill levels.
That sounds like so much fun. We visited Oahu but didn’t leave the city since we didn’t have a car… Not recommended to not get a car. I feel like we missed so much. I hope to go back again one day so I can visit this ranch. Thank you for sharing.
How fun! I have zero ability on horseback (and, in fact, of the handful of times that I’ve been on a horse, I’ve been thrown off twice. Fun.), but I’m a glutton for punishment and am always willing to try again. This is exactly the kind of thing that I’d love to try when I do make it to Hawaii!
Friends of ours just returned back from a four day stay there. Couldn’t say enough nice things. Picture they took were beautiful.
