5 Ways to Keep a Smile on YOUR Face No Matter What!

1 Gratefulness Count
If you only take away one thing from this article it should be this, the practice of being grateful. Gratefulness helps draw you into the present moment re-focusing your brain on all the wonderful things that are happening in your life. Gratefulness is beneficial to your “physical health & psychological health, improves sleep & self-esteem, enhances empathy & decreases aggression, and gratitude also increases mental strength” as stated in an article in Forbes.
An easy way you can get started living a life full of gratitude is by performing what is known as a “gratefulness count” each morning before you get out of bed. It’s simple! All you do is silently go through the things you are grateful for in your head. You can even do this while you are still lying in bed.
You can start with things like your health, fresh air, a roof over your head, the sound of birds chirping outside etc… This simple practice sets the mood for a day full of gratitude (and in turn happiness too). After a few weeks of practice, you will notice that small things in life, like a beautiful spring bloom, will stop you dead in your tracks. You won’t be able to simply walk past such a wondrous beauty. It’s life-changing!
There is a reason the world has become obsessed with the Danish tradition of hygge, after all, Denmark has consistently been voted one of the happiest countries in the world year after year. Adding some hygge into your own life can help increase your happiness and the best part about hygge is everyone can do it!
Visit Denmark says “In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.” There is nothing more hyggelig than gathering around potluck dinner with good friends and discussing the simple pleasures in life. Warm cozy socks, snuggling up next to the fireplace, or taking the time to read a good book are also ways to practice hygge. Just be sure to check your ego at the door, as bragging and boasting about one’s own accomplishments are known as a big no, no to the Danes who believe in equality amongst all.
3 Healthy Food
It’s no secret that your diet impacts your mood. We are accustomed to the amalgam of hungry and angry (hangry) used to describe the mood someone is when they are overly hungry. But, while simply eating any food may help veer off a hangry episode there is something to be noted about the relationship healthy, whole food has on your mood.
“A very large body of evidence now exists that suggests diet is as important to mental health as it is to physical health,” says Felice Jacka, president of the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research. “A healthy diet is protective and an unhealthy diet is a risk factor for depression and anxiety.”
With the slow food movement, ease of locating organic produce and meats, and the surge of farm-to-table restaurants it is easier than ever to find wholesome local food to keep your brain in tip-top shape.
4 Find Inspiration
Another way to keep a smile on your face is to seek inspiration. Of course, traveling the world makes this easy as you are more present in the moment than when you are at home and on auto-pilot. But, inspiration truly can be found in the most simple and mundane scenes.
Stopping to smell some freshly cut flowers in the grocery store, noticing a beautiful butterfly fluttering across your path, or even paying attention to signs put out there in the universe for you. Things like the repetition in your life of a favorite or meaningful number, a freak coincidence that makes you smile, or a phrase on a shirt that you find meaningful or relatable. Really anything that inspires you to chase your dreams, reach for the stars, and smile from ear to ear will help multiply your happiness.

5 Fake It
Putting your negative thoughts on hold and then faking a smile can actually help boost your mood. It’s true! The facial feedback hypothesis suggests that our facial expressions influence our emotions. So, you can literally turn your frown upside down. Give it a try next time you are feeling gloom. Just be sure you come back and visit your negative emotion at a later time as repressing emotions can have a negative impact on your mental health and is a warning sign for depression.
Laughter doesn’t have to be reserved only for children. Adults may be out of practice but it won’t take long for you to retrace the things in life that made you laugh out loud as a child. Find ways to bring those things back into your everyday adult life and you will be well on your way to rocking your own happiness!
