Planning a Disney trip? Whether you’re heading to Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort, you’ll want to know about MagicBand+, Disney’s upgraded wearable that makes your vacation smoother and more fun.
MagicBands have been around for over a decade, but they’ve come a long way. If it’s been a few years since your last visit, here’s everything that’s changed and why MagicBand+ is worth considering for your next trip!
What is a MagicBand?

MagicBand+ is a rechargeable, wearable wristband that links to your My Disney Experience (or Disneyland app) account. It serves as:
- Your park ticket
- Hotel room key
- Lightning Lane access
- Wallet for in-park purchases
- Link to all your Disney PhotoPass pics
MagicBands are waterproof, reusable, and customizable. And unlike a smartphone, you don’t have to worry about battery life throughout the day. Just tap and go… it’s that easy.
With MagicBand+, Disney has added interactive features like lights and vibrations that sync with fireworks shows, and in-park games like bounty hunting in Galaxy’s Edge.
What’s New in 2025
Back in the day, Disney Resort guests received a free MagicBand with their hotel stay. That’s no longer the case.
Here’s what’s changed:
- MagicBand+ is now the only MagicBand option sold by Disney. The original version without interactivity has been discontinued.
- Guests staying at a Disney Resort can pre-order MagicBand+ at a discounted price, typically $24.99–$34.99, depending on the design.
- Pre-orders must be made at least 11 days before arrival to be shipped to your home, or 6–10 days before for pickup at your hotel.
- If you’re not staying at a Disney Resort, you can still purchase MagicBand+ online or in the parks (usually $34.99–$59.99).
You can also skip the band altogether and use Disney MagicMobile via your smartphone—but let’s be honest, it’s hard to beat the convenience of a quick wrist tap (and your phone doesn’t light up with fireworks).
What Makes MagicBand+ Different?
While it does all the essentials, MagicBand+ adds some extra magic with interactive features:
- Lights and vibrations that sync with nighttime spectaculars like Happily Ever After and World of Color
- Interactions with special statues around Walt Disney World (like the 50th Anniversary golden characters)
- A bounty hunting game in Galaxy’s Edge, available at both Disneyland and Disney World
- Rechargeable battery and included USB charger
These features are fun—especially for kids—but entirely optional. If all you want is a tap-and-go experience, you’ll still get that with or without engaging in the extras.
What Can MagicBand+ Do?
Here’s everything you can use MagicBand+ for during your trip:
Park Entry
No need to pull out a ticket or open an app, just tap your band at the entrance touchpoints and you’re in.
Lightning Lane Access
Book your Genie+ selections in the app, then use your MagicBand to scan in when it’s time to ride.

Resort Room Access
Staying at a Disney Resort? Your MagicBand is also your room key. Every member of your family can have their own, so there’s no stress about lost keys or whose holding the door.
Dining + Dining Plans
Your dining reservations are linked to your account. At many table-service restaurants, you can check in with just a tap. If you’re using a Disney Dining Plan, your band also tracks your meal credits.
Pools & Water Rides
MagicBands are fully waterproof and can be worn in the pool or on water rides. Just make sure they’re secure. Ours have slipped off a time or two, especially at Beach Club. We recommend getting a Bit Belt to keep it snug!

PhotoPass & Ride Photos
Disney photographers and ride cameras will link your pictures to your account with a quick scan of your band. On some rides, MagicBand+ even uploads your photos automatically without needing a tap.
Purchases in the Parks
You can link a credit card to your MagicBand and use it to pay for snacks, souvenirs, meals, and more. You’ll set a PIN when you activate the feature, so it’s safe and secure.

MagicBand+ also adds a layer of interactivity throughout your trip.
It lights up and vibrates in sync with certain nighttime shows, interacts with special golden character statues around the parks, and even lets you play interactive games like bounty hunting in Galaxy’s Edge.
Can You Customize It?
Yes! MagicBand+ can be personalized to match your style. Options include:
- Dozens of designs featuring Disney characters, park icons, and limited edition themes
- Name engraving on the inside (up to 9 characters)
- Swappable band accessories and charms to make each one unique
Our tip? Let each family member choose their own. It builds pre-trip excitement and helps everyone keep track of their own band.
Do You Really Need One?
Not necessarily. You can absolutely do Disney without a MagicBand+. Your smartphone can do most of the same things, and you can request a physical Key to the World card at your hotel.
That said, MagicBand+ is a favorite for many families, especially when you’re park hopping, traveling with kids, or want a hands-free way to move through your day. It helps kids feel more involved and gives parents one less thing to keep track of.
Pro Tips to Know Before You Go

- Order early if you’re staying at a Disney Resort to get the best price and design selection
- Charge your band the night before your first park day (and pack the charger!)
- Use a Bit Belt or band keeper to avoid losing it in the pool
- Keep it for next time—MagicBand+ works at both Disneyland and Disney World, and even on Disney Cruise Line (as DisneyBand+)
MagicBand+ isn’t essential, but it is convenient, fun, and makes your Disney vacation feel a little more magical. Whether you’re using it for park access, photo linking, or syncing up with the fireworks at night, it adds an extra layer of ease and enchantment to your trip.

We go to Disney every year and have never once had to use our Magic Bands at the pool. Maybe we just haven’t stayed at one where they scan your band, but none of the ones we’ve stayed at has ever had a cast member there to scan it.
Also, be careful about using your Magic Band at a restaurant. If you want a DDP credit used for the meal, then okay. If you want the meal charged to your card on file, then okay. Otherwise, don’t let me them scan it or you’ll be paying for a meal differently than how you wanted to. Just because you have the DDP doesn’t mean you want to use it for every meal. We often pay out of pocket at places where the cost of the meal is much lower than a dining credit meal will be in order to get value for the meal plan. We also go with Disney gift cards that we’ll use instead of the card on file. So don’t just let them scan it unless you know that’s how you want to pay for the meal!
That is a great point about making sure to clarify when you order whether or not you want to use your dining plan. In terms of the pool, at the beach club, there are people who scan your band to make sure you are staying at the pool.
Is the magic band included with the price of the military rate for a 5 day hoppers pass?
We made reservations at a Disney resort and have our magic bands. But we had to reschedule our trip. If we decide to stay off property do we return our bands? Do they become inactive and we need to either pay for them or buy new ones?
I don’t believe you will be charged for the bands. You can probably go to guest services and link the bands to your account and tickets and use them like normal.
How did you get the other color bands as part of your package? They only offer like 8 colors then a few designed ones.
I’m a little confused with having magic band+ for my kids who would really enjoy all the interactive elements. Can they do, for example, the bounty hunter activity with my phone or can only I do it since my band would be the main one?
