Disneyland vs California Adventure Park

In 1955, Disneyland Park opened its magical gates, enchanting visitors from around the world. Fast forward to 2001, and Disney unveiled Disney California Adventure Park, celebrating the rich culture and adventurous spirit of California.

Is one park bigger than the other?

Disney Resort, which includes the hotels and the Downtown Disney District, occupies a whopping 500 acres of space. Disneyland Park sits on 85 acres of land, while Disney California Adventure clocks in at 72 acres, making both park sizes comparable considering how much walking and/or stroller pushing you will be doing.

There is a drastic difference between attendance rates at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, however. According to Statista, Disneyland had 16.88 million visitors in 2022, whereas Disney California Adventure had just 9 million visitors in the same year.

Consider attendance rates when deciding which park to visit and how you and your children may fare in large crowds.

Disneyland vs California Adventure Park Themes and Lands

Disneyland has 9 themed lands: Main Street U.S.A, Mickey’s Toontown, Frontierland, Tomorrowland, Critter Country, Adventureland, New Orleans Square, Fantasyland, and the newest land Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

You’ll find classic Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, Donald Duck, Goofy, and more in Toontown. Star Wars fan favorites can be seen lurking around Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Disney princesses and other fairytale characters can be spotted throughout the park.

Each land is expertly crafted to look as authentic as possible and honor the theme of which they were designed. Critter Country is landscaped with green foliage and with shops and restaurants seemingly built into the trees. It makes you feel as though you stepped into the woods. New Orleans Square absolutely captures the look and feel of the real NOLA through its color palette, styling, and Creole Townhouse-inspired buildings that line its lamp-lit streets. You will be sure to find a themed land that is your favorite.

At Disney California Adventure, there are 7 themed lands: Grizzly Peak, Buena Vista Street, Cars Land, Pixar Pier, Hollywood Land, Avengers Campus, and Pacific Wharf (Pacific Wharf is currently being transformed into San Fransokyo Square). These themed lands represent aspects of California or represent newer films under the Pixar or Disney name.

Over in Cars Land, it is fully decked out with characters and scenery from the Cars films. You can wave hello to Lighting McQueen while cruising past the Cozy Cone Motel and Luigi’s Casa Della Tires. Hollywood Land will make you feel like a star on a film set complete with bright lights and backdrops. Over at Avengers Campus, you’ll find heroes like Iron Man, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and more testing out their skills and trying to recruit up-and-coming heroes to their cause.

When it comes to transporting you to someplace new, no one can top Disney and the parks at Disneyland Resort are no exception. So really, you can’t go wrong with either park in this regard.

Rides

There are a ton of great rides at Disneyland Park, including classics like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, The Haunted Mansion, “it’s a Small World,” Space Mountain, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Rides like the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean may scare younger visitors, as they are dark and have some creepy props. However, there are rides that are better suited for small children like “It’s a Small World,” Casey Jr. Circus Train, and King Arthur Carousel since they are slower and with more kid-friendly aesthetic appeal.

For older children and adults, there are more thrilling rides like the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, and Star Wars – The Adventure Continues, which all are loud, dark, and have small drops.

Disney California Adventure has fewer rides than Disneyland but still has options for young children, teens, and adults to enjoy. Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! has become hugely popular. Thrillseekers and superhero enthusiasts alike love this ride, but the big drops may not be for everyone. Similarly, WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure is a fun-filled ride full of spins that may or may not be a turn-off for the littlest visitors.

For more mild rides that are more fun than scary, there is the Jumpin’ Jellyfish, Radiator Springs Racers, and Soarin’ Round the World. Jessie’s Critter Carousel and Pixar Pal-A-Round are tame rides for those who want to take it slow.

If you want to pack as many rides in as you can, you get more bang for your buck at Disneyland Park. You also have plenty of mild rides to choose from if you’re traveling with young children. However, since many of the most popular rides are there at Disneyland, you are bound to wait in some long lines to get on.

Disney California Adventure packs the punch when it comes to thrill rides for older children and teens, but there are far fewer rides there than at Disneyland if you or your children were hoping for many ride options. 

Shows

Both parks have a few daytime entertainment options. 

At Disneyland, the Dapper Dans can be found singing and tapping on Main Street, U.S.A., and over at Fantasyland you can watch new renditions of Beauty and the Beast and Tangled be performed at the Royal Theatre.

At Disney California Adventure, you can dance your tail off at the Disney Junior Dance Party! and Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off! You can take in a performance by Five and Dime at Buena Vista Street or the Mariachi Divas at Paradise Gardens.

Both parks feature parades at various times of the day with additional themed parades being added throughout the year. However, if you were hoping to see fireworks, then Disneyland is the place to be. There are usually two fireworks shows on Main Street, U.S.A. and the theme depends on the season you are visiting. You can also see Fantasmic!, a popular show that takes place on Rivers of America and can be viewed from New Orleans Square.

Disney California Adventure has no fireworks, but their nighttime show World of Color uses water jets, colored lights, music, and pyrotechnics to create a beautiful spectacle.

Food

There is a wide variety of food to choose from at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Both have table service restaurants and quick service options.

Disneyland has 4 table service restaurants:

• Blue Bayou (Cajun-Creole)
• Café Orleans (Cajun-Creole)
• Carnation Café (American)
• River Belle Terrace (Southern American)

Disneyland has several Quick Service spots. Some of these are:

• Alien Pizza Planet (pizza, pasta, salads)
• Bengal Barbecue (BBQ skewers)
• Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo (Star Wars-themed offerings)
• Hungry Bear Café (American)
• Plaza Inn (American Buffet breakfast)

Disney California Adventure has 3 restaurants:

• Carthay Circle Restaurant (American fine dining)
• Lamplight Lounge (California-inspired plates)
• Wine Country Trattoria (Italian casual dining)

A few Quick Service Options are Disney California Adventure:

• Flo’s V8 Café (American)

Both parks have delectable options for sit-down dining and Quick Service, so it purely comes down to taste preference as to which theme park has the better dining options for your family.
