It’s that time of year again… Back to School Shopping!!! With 5 munchkins in our house that adds up to a pretty hefty bill every year. Thankfully, this year I have a new plan. You see after all the traveling I have been doing for work I have learned how to maximize outfits by creating capsules around a few pieces I really love. And, it got me thinking… maybe I could do the same for the kids as they head back to school.
What is a capsule you ask?? Have no fear I am going to walk you through the entire process, save you big bucks and make sure you have one of the Best Dressed Kids in School!!! Promise!!!
Save Big with a Back to School Capsule Wardrobe
As many of you know my Ella is a little fashionista so when it comes to back to school she is ALL about the clothes. Finding the perfect outfit for her is typically quite the task. As much as I want to foster her love of design, I also want to be cautious of the fact that she is only 8 years old. I want to help embrace her love for style while also helping her veer towards age appropriate fashion and these days that is becoming harder and harder to do. Thankfully, OshKosh B’Gosh has an adorable, super stylish, comfortable and age appropriate line of kids clothes perfect for daughters like mine.
What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
I know right! I had no clue what a capsule wardrobe was until I started traveling a ton and needed to learn how to condense a weeks worth of clothes into a carry on. I started searching for answers and I came across this idea of a capsule wardrobe where you build as many different outfits out of a few key pieces as possible. Voila! It hit me… not only was this a fantastic way to pack. This was a phenomenal way to shop. Especially, for kids. Less clothes means less money, less morning battles and less laundry. It was a total win!
I grew up wearing OshKosh B’Gosh so when I found out they had a full line of fashionable girls clothes up to size 14 I was stoked. I knew in order for this to work I would need to involve Ella. So, I sat Ella down at the computer and showed her some examples of capsule wardrobes on Pinterest. Once she understood the concept we then logged online to OshKosh and began looking. It was actually pretty easy as OshKosh has a great tab called “Outfitting” where they lay out sample outfits to help give you ideas on how to style their clothes.
Ella quickly found her favorite piece… it was a beautiful navy blue dress with a ruffle detail and ribbon belt. I was excited because I knew we could build a lot around this essential piece maximizing my dollars and her closet all at the same time. She is also somewhat of a shoe queen so when she caught a glimpse of the sparkly cat flats I knew there was no turning back. And, like that our first outfit was done.

Ella is not only a fashionista but she is also obsessed with all things French and Parisan so when we were browsing through Osh Kosh’s t-shirt selection I wasn’t surprised a bit when she picked a pink t-shirt with the Eiffel Tower on it. This was her final piece in our set and it went perfectly with the rest of her collection. Here are two more outfits she created.
The Results
For under $100 Ella and I created 5- cool, age appropriate, kid approved looks that will take her from summer to fall in style. And, quite honestly by adding a few things that she already has in her closet we can stretch these looks even further! I feel like that is an incredible value. And, the best part is Ella and I had SO MUCH FUN creating these looks!!!

Thanks Ciera… good luck with school!!
Thank you Mary… I agree but I am partial obviously 😉 Capsule wardrobes are super fun. You can also afford to buy the accessories that go along with them bc you can spread them across so many outfits.
How funny… I was just looking at trying Stitch Fix for myself 😉
How cool! Online shopping is definitely the way to go. There are so many options!

What a great idea to do a capsule wardrobe with kids. I’ve seen so many capsule wardrobe posts for us moms but this is the first I have seen for kids’ clothes, and it’s brilliant! Love the outfits you’ve put together here too. Darling!

This is so cute! I want to do this for my kids and myself! I love the idea of everything coordinating and making so many different outfits out of just a few pieces of clothing.
What adorable outfits! I wish had a younger daughter:(
Cute styles! I have never heard of a wardrobe capsule. I love the idea!
Such cute outfits! Capsule wardrobes are great for so many reasons!
Thank you Karissa. We had so much fun putting them together. I grew up wearing OshKosh so it was neat dressing my own babes in their brand.
Wish I had known this when my kids were young.
It is pretty helpful… and definitely cost effective!
What a great idea to create a capsule wardrobe for kids!
So, happy you like it Lauren. I am obsessed with it. Just did my 3 year olds fall wardrobe the same way and its so much more fun since its easier to add shoes and accessories when everything is color coordinated.
Thank you so much for explaining what a capsule wardrobe is! I need to try this for me for sure! Question though (I know, I’m over thinking this!), If the idea is to wear things 2 or 3 times in various combinations – how many capsule wardrobes does one need to shuffle between to not be doing laundry every 2 days?
Great questions. So a capsule wardrobe is several pieces that can be interchanged and worn in different ways to create completely new looks. Typically, it would not just have one centerpiece item so it wouldn’t be as difficult but bc we were trying to keep it under $100 and include shoes that made our options a bit more limited. Usually it is a dress, a few tops, two pairs of pants, maybe a sweater or jacket and a few pairs of shoes + accessories. But, because you are conscience shopping you get items that interact well with each other and in turn have less and spend less but still look amazing!!! Hope that helps 🙂
