If there is one thing in this world I love to give to my kids, it is the gift of travel. The experiences we share, the people they meet and the moments we have together are simply invaluable. However, traveling with five kids can be quite expensive let me tell you. Flights, hotels, dining and more adds up quickly, so we are always looking for ways to save on our travel expenses. One of our favorite ways to save on our travels is by using points. Here is my credit card strategy to earn points and save on travel.

The credit card strategy that helps me afford traveling with five kids.

credit card strategy

1. Choose a card with easy ways to earn extra points where you spend most

Look for a credit card that offers you extra points at the places you tend to spend the most money. Before I was a mother of five, I used to have time to search for any way to earn double or triple points. Some credit cards would offer double points on groceries for one quarter and home improvement the next. While I could keep track of all that stuff in my former life—now I look for simplicity.

For a traveling mama of five, the Premium Rewards® credit card from Bank of America is my go-to choice. I earn two points for every dollar I spend on travel and dining purchases. Trust me—when I head out to dinner with five kids (three of which are teenage boys), I am racking up some serious points. Plus, I don’t have to worry about spending money at a certain restaurant, it’s just anywhere we dine. It’s that easy.

2. Earn points on everyday purchases

The next thing I look for to help our family rack up some points is a card that earns you points on every purchase no matter what it is. The Premium Rewards® credit card from Bank of America offers 1.5 points for every dollar I spend on purchases so whether I am hitting up the grocery store, paying for swim lessons or buying some back-to-school clothes we are earning points.

3. Easy loyalty perks

Loyalty programs are key for earning extra points. But after traveling for years, I learned that you will save more money by finding the most affordable flights rather than trying to stick with one airline to earn their loyalty perks and earn miles. So, I look for loyalty programs that offer more flexible loyalty points, and are easy to be loyal to for years.

That’s why I love the Premium Rewards® credit card because I can earn loyalty bonuses by simply having eligible account balances with Bank of America. I have had a Bank of America account for over 20 years, so this an easy way to earn bonus rewards. I am a Preferred Rewards customer, which means I can earn a 25% to 75% rewards bonus on every purchase or up to 3.5 points for every dollar I spend on travel and dining purchases. That is a whole lot easier than trying to book the same airline over and over to earn loyalty points!

4. Choose a program with flexible reward redemption!

The one thing I do not want to worry about is having difficulty redeeming rewards. Personally, I love to redeem rewards for travel, however, that’s not the best choice for everyone. Find a program that suits you, or better yet, choose a card that has a variety of reward options. With the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card, I can redeem points for travel, cash back as a statement credit or for gift cards.

5. Look for a nice sign-up bonus!

Pretty much every credit card out there has an incentive to apply. I have two rules of thumb when it comes to sign-up perks.

1) It should be easily attainable: Some credit card companies offer a great sign up bonus but you need to spend almost a fortune to obtain those perks.

2) The bonus offer should be a minimum value of $250: I once applied for a different card with 40,000 bonus points, but sadly, those bonus points amounted to about $125 worth of travel. Lesson learned: Make sure that the points you are earning are worth something.

The Premium Rewards® credit card from Bank of America offers 50,000 bonus points after you spend at least $3,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening and those points are worth a $500 value. To learn more: Check out all the benefits here!

Overall Strategy

The overall theme of my credit card strategy is the combination of value and convenience. With kids, life gets pretty busy, which means we don’t have an immense amount of time for credit cards that make you jump through hoops to earn bonus points. Instead, we look for a great overall card that gives you great rewards, honors loyal customers, is easy to redeem and has a nice sign-up bonus.
