hello,

As a family travel writer there a lot of places we visit which try to do incredible things to attract families, some with success and others not so much. The Hyatt Regency Lost Pines is not like that, this resort caters to families in the best ways possible, by giving them the simple pleasures of being a family. I have never been to a resort where I was more relaxed and had more fun doing the simple things, like riding a bike, playing horseshoes, or skipping rocks. Just 20 minutes outside of Austin, but what feels like a world away this is by far the best hotel in Austin for families.

Getting to the Resort

Entrance to Hyatt Regency Lost Pines

We arrived at the Austin airport and rented a car using Turo (which I loved Turo by the way). The resort is about 20 miles out but the last two miles is the best part. As you pull into the resort you are taken down through this windy road through trees and set back you will find the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort.

Rooms

We have a large family with 6 kids so finding a room that fits us, is usually quite difficult. We were lucky enough to stay in their newly renovated VIP suite and it was ah-mazing. The one thing you had to love about this suite was what every family needs, space. The rooms were set up in a perfect way for a family with one room with two queen beds, a living area with a drop down murphy bed and then a huge Master suite.

There are even little touches that you don’t see in many places. For instance in the middle of the night there is a sensor so the under the bed lighting comes on when you get out of bed. No more stubbing your toe.

Check out our room tour, here.

Things to Do at Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort

Now we are getting to the really good stuff. There is literally an endless amount of things to do, (ok figuratively, not literally, but you know what I mean). When you check in to the resort they will give you an activity calendar with all the activities for the week. The best part, most of them are included with the resort fee.

Nightly S’mores

Every Night around two large bon fires, families gather to enjoy nightly s’mores provided complimentary by the resort. I don’t exactly what it is about gathering around a fire and cooking s’mores, but it always leads to great conversation, funny stories and just an overall great time with the fam.

Visit with the Mascots

Every day you can take the opportunity to visit the resorts mascots, which are a couple of alpacas, pigs, donkeys and a longhorn. You can pet all but the longhorn and it is a ton of fun… watch out for the alpacas, they spit.

Bike Ride around the Resort

Throughout the resort you will find bike racks with hundreds of bikes. You can pick one up at anytime during the daytime and ride to wherever you need to on the resort property.

Play Yard Games

Again, it is the simple things about this resort that I love so much. Spend a little time playing tetherball, ping pong, corn hole or horse shoes. We did so right after dinner during sundown and it was the start to a perfect evening.

Get Face Painted, Balloon Artists & More

There are face painters, and then there are the face painters who come to the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort. Holllllly Cow. They were unbelievable. Once a week you will find these face painters come to offer their services. There is no fee, but tips are greatly appreciated.

On other days you will find balloon artists which I heard are pretty spectacular as well.

Go Fishing

If you brought your pole, we did not, there is a giant fishing pond for you to enjoy catching fish. They also having family fishing expeditions thaty u can enjoy for a pretty nominal fee.

Enjoy Outdoor Movie Night

A few times a week the resort host Outdoor Movie Night, where families can gather and enjoy movies like Aladdin, Jungle Book, or whatever favorite family classic movie is playing.

Other Activities

There honestly so many more activities listed on the daily calendar, it is quite extensive. I also enjoyed cruising through the butterfly and hummingbird garden. Actually one of our favorite things was just the wide open grass areas. We would see our kids playing tag or tossing a ball around. Like I said, this resort just does all the little things right which makes for the perfect family getaway and why this place is the best hotel in Austin.

Paid Activities

In addition to all the free activities included in the resort, there are also some paid activities you can go on. We did not take part in any on this trip so I can’t give you a full review. However horseback rides are offered and I know the night time glow zip line is supposed to be fantastic.

Pool & Lazy River

Now, onto what is probably the most popular aspect of the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort, the amazing pool. The pool area is big to say the least. With a splash area, a lazy river that goes on and on and on, plus a fun tower water slide, you can find yourself enjoying the pool for hours if not the whole day.

Dining

The resort has several places to dine on property. We had time to enjoy two of the establishments.

Firewheel

In the Morning if you want a nice sit down breakfast, Firewheel is the spot. You can get yourself a delicious breakfast buffet, but we actually preferred a lot of dishes of the a la carte menu. The huevos rancheros are delicious, the french toast is amazing and the healthy egg white scramble is quite good. Honestly, we ate there multiple times and did not have a bad dish.

Shellers Barrelhouse

In the evening we visited Shellers Barrelhouse for a relaxed dinner. The atmosphere is great and perfect for families. There are definitely a few must try dishes on tap. The giant pretzel is a great way to start the dinner and by far the best entree is the orange glazed chicken, a definite must have.

Overall

Like I said earlier, the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines does all the simple things extremely well. It is one of my favorite family vacation spots and definitely the best hotel in Austin for families because it is one of those iconic resorts that have everything kids and parents love. Fun activities for the kids, and a nice slow pace to enjoy time with your kids. You can check out more reviews and book online at Hyatt.com

    Hi,
Thank you for your review of this property. We have a family of 6 and really appreciate your insight. I was looking at their website regarding the suite options and I don’t see the additional 2 Queen room being included with the VIP suite. Did you book an additional room to connect to your suite?
