Just 30 minutes from Boston, is the famous (or infamous depending on how you look at it) Salem Ma. When people often think about Salem, Massachusetts, the first thing that comes to mind is witches. After all, Salem is nicknamed the “Witch City. ”  Although the witch trials of 1692 played an important part in Salem’s history, the city has so much more to offer visitors of all ages.  Within the span of a few miles, there are a ton of things to do in Salem, Ma. Families can enjoy an exciting mix of maritime activities, outdoor adventures, and historical experiences.

Many area attractions cater to families or have programming geared to young children. While there are certainly many terrifying attractions to explore, there are many that are much more family-friendly. There is so much going on in Salem, that kids from toddlers to teens will always find something to discover.

A visit to Salem’s newest attraction will have you talking like a pirate for the rest of the day.  At The Real Pirates exhibit, visitors learn the authentic stories of the crew of the ship, Whydah, which was captured by pirates in 1717.  The museum also features a unique opportunity to see real pieces of pirate treasure and hands-on experiences for children to learn about life aboard a pirate vessel.  

THE GOOD WITCH OF SALEM

Not all witches are scary and evil. The Good Witch of Salem hosts a calendar full of events for the littlest of tourists. Fantasy lovers can learn how to mix potions and explore the art of magic-making through classes and workshops. Other offerings include painting classes, manicures, and sensory activities.

A trip to Salem is not complete without a visit to Ye Olde Pepper Companie, America’s oldest Candy Company.  Walk into this quaint shop and step back in time while you indulge your sweet tooth.  Scrumptious, old-fashioned treats include fudge, saltwater taffy, and the store’s famous gibralters.  Cross the street and spend some time at The House of the Seven Gables. The museum offers a special grounds pass which includes access to the beautiful gardens and an interactive children’s exhibit.  

SALEM WILLOWS ARCADE

Take a step back in time and enjoy some fun and games at the Salem Willows Arcade.  This retro attraction has been a fixture in the city for generations.  The arcade combines modern video games alongside classics such as skeeball and pinball.  An old-time merry-go-round and kiddy rides are right down the strip and there are a plethora of food offerings.  Local favorites include ice cream and popcorn from Hobbs Popcorn.

The Salem Kids Tours are a wonderful way for children and families to learn about the city’s rich history.  Visitors can choose between the children’s history tour or the slightly spookier tour.  Both walking tours are an hour long and take visitors to several historic landmarks.  Along the way, tour guides entertain guests with true stories about the city‘s history through fun, kid-friendly narration. 

GOODNIGHT FATTY/GOOD MORNING CHUBBY

There is no better way to end a day of travel than with a scrumptious cookie from Goodnight Fatty.  Each weekend, the bakers offer up three over-the-top fatty (cookie) choices which can also be paired with a bowl full of soft served ice cream or a cold glass of milk.  On Sundays, the shop is transformed into Good Morning Chubby and features a variety of large breakfast bites (chubbies).  In the colder months, patrons can savor their treats while eating in a heated outdoor igloo.  When the weather is warm, families can take part in outdoor lawn games in the courtyard.

Feeling adventurous or want to view the city from a different perspective? Coast to Coast Paddle, located at Salem Willows, will hook you up with all you need to have a successful day on the water.  Kayaks and standup paddleboards can be rented by the hour or by the day.  The company also offers group and private lessons. The sunset paddle tour provides guests with breathtaking views of the harbor.

Put on your sea legs and set sail on the Schooner Fame.  A harbor cruise on this full-size replica of an 1812 privateer is a great way for families to learn about maritime history while taking in some amazing views of the harbor and outlying islands.  Sit back and enjoy the sights or take part in helping the crew hoist the sails. 

SALEM TROLLEY TOURS

What better way to see the city than on an old-fashioned trolley?  Salem Trolley Tours are offered several times throughout the day and take riders on an eight-mile loop throughout the city.  Passengers can stop and get off at any or all of the 14 tourist stops, explore the attractions, and then continue on with the tour.  Along the way, knowledgeable guides provide travelers with historical narration and comical stories.

Get fancy and enjoy some tea with your little ones. Jolie Tea Company offers several daily high tea times.  There is an extensive selection of teas to choose from, and they are perfectly paired with yummy tea sandwiches and decadent sweets. On Fridays afternoons, Jolie also offers a special high tea for children under the age of twelve.  

PEABODY ESSEX MUSEU

Visitors of all ages will enjoy this world-renowned museum which is located in the heart of downtown.  Young explorers will be particularly drawn to the museum’s Art and Nature Center where they can take part in hands-on exploration and learning.  The Peabody Essex Museum also regularly hosts a variety of ever-changing family-friendly events and exhibitions.  Children under age 16 and under receive free admission to the museum.

Located on a peninsula on Salem Neck,  Winter Island Park is the place to go to for some outdoor fun.  Visitors can swim or sunbathe at the beach, climb and slide at the playground, or explore the old fort, Coast Guard buildings, and lighthouse.  There is also a beautiful walking trail around the island.  Camping sites are also available for RVs or tents.

The Witchery provides guests with  a magical opportunity to try their hands at broom making.  Children 11 and older can take part in a workshop where they create a unique broom from scratch and younger sorcerers (ages 3-10) can participate in a broom decorating class.  The Witchery also offers a Bookbinding workshop for teens and adults.

A round of family mini-golf is a great way to have fun during any vacation. You can’t go wrong by spending the afternoon or evening at Castle Creek Adventure Land. Golf eighteen holes around waterfalls and fountains and then take a spin at the go-cart course.  There is also a driving range and snack shack on site. Don’t leave without sampling some delicious ice cream.

Pro-tip: While some of the bigger museums and attractions are open year-round, the tourist season runs from April to November.  Halloween time draws the biggest crowds.  The best time to visit with littles is late spring and summer when the crowds are smaller and the lines are shorter.  

Pro tip: As the locals say, “Every day is Halloween in Salem,” meaning pretty much anything goes. It is not unusual at any time of year to see people walking down the street dressed in witch hats, cloaks, or in full costume.  Don’t be afraid to add a little flair when you come to visit.
